A once-in-a-generation opportunity.
Highland Copper’s Copperwood Project in Wakefield and Ironwood Townships in Gogebic County is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to create local jobs and boost economic development in the Western Upper Peninsula while respecting the environment around us.
The Copperwood Project is one of very few fully permitted greenfield copper mines in the United States. The project will create approximately 700 direct and indirect jobs and meet Michigan’s stringent mining and environmental regulations.
Why the Copperwood Project?
The U.S. is facing a growing copper supply deficiency driven by rising demand for clean energy technologies, electric vehicles and infrastructure projects. Securing a stable, domestically sourced copper supply is essential to reducing reliance on foreign markets and strengthening the nation’s supply chain. Investing in domestic copper production will not only enhance economic and national security but also support job creation and ensure the U.S. remains a leader in the industries of the future.

“I want to see our community thrive like it did many years ago. I believe that the mines and the recreation areas can coexist very well together. We want to bring some industry and some very good jobs to the area and enhance our tourism and recreation.”
